Psychotherapy

Child and Adolescent

When working with children, adolescents, and their families, we tailor our treatment to the needs of each individual client. Most often, treatment involves a combination of individual sessions, parent sessions, and dyadic work (the child or adolescent and parent/caregiver together).

In individual therapy, our approach is evidenced-based and goal-directed; we help your child or adolescent develop the skills necessary to cope with problems more effectively. We provide a warm and supportive atmosphere so that your child or adolescent will feel comfortable and have a positive and rewarding experience. Our therapists work collaboratively with children, adolescents, and their parents/caregivers to achieve treatment goals.

We incorporate many of the principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) into our work. CBT is typically a short-term and action-oriented treatment with a focus helping children and adolescents to alter inaccurate thinking patterns or “thinking traps” that may be negatively impacting their mood and behavior.

Our parenting work focuses on helping parents/caregivers to develop positive strategies and solutions to address their child’s behavioral difficulties and other problems at home and at school. Areas of focus for parenting younger children often include increasing strategic praise and positive attention, implementing effective reward systems, applying natural and logical consequences, and improving clarity and consistency in limit-setting. For older children and adolescents, areas of intervention often consist of improving communication, facilitating collaborative problem-solving, and fostering your child’s independence.

Adult

As in our work with children and adolescents, our psychotherapy with adults is tailored to the needs of each individual client. Our therapists work collaboratively with clients to develop treatment goals that will help them address their particular areas of difficulty and improve their quality of life. Our approaches are evidenced-based and focus on working with clients to develop skills that they can use to cope with their problems more effectively.

Family Therapy

Our approach to family therapy involves working with couples and families to address areas of difficulty and bring about positive change. This is accomplished by meeting with many or all members of the family together. The focus is not on the individual, but rather on the family system as a whole. The goals of family therapy often include enhancing communication between family members, reducing conflict, facilitating positive adjustment to family transitions and, ultimately, improving the quality of family relationships. Family therapy may be the primary treatment modality or may be an adjunct to other modalities of treatment, such as individual therapy.
